Water Conservancy

Jiangsu has built, through decades of efforts, five water conservancy systems, namely, the system of flood control, the system of water logging control, the system of draught control, the system of tidal wave control and the system of ground water table control. By the end of 2001, effective irrigation coverage has extended to 3.9 million hectares of arable land, including 3.698 million hectares equipped with diesel or electrical pumps and has secured crop harvest 3.053 million hectares of arable land. 460 thousand tube wells are available throughout the province to support crop production.

Agricultural Mechanization

In 2001, the combined power of agricultural mechanization was 29.58 million kilowatts, or 6 kilowatts per hectare and 38% above the national average. Jiangsu has maintained 60 thousand large and medium tractors and 52 thousand combine harvesters. The mechanization has replaced hands in 72% of the field operations, namely, 4.109 million hectares of land preparation, 1.787 million hectares of sowing, 3.022 million hectares of harvesting and 4.282 million hectares of plant protection.

Agricultural-support Industry

Jiangsu has built up its industry of nitrogenous, phosphorous and potash fertilizer production to turn out 1.88 million tons of synthetic ammonia and 16 thousand tons of agricultural film. As one of the principal agrochemical producers in China, Jiangsu has built 220 agrochemical plants and is producing 90 thousand tons of active ingredients, representing 25% of the agrochemical production in China.
