Crop Production

In 2001, 4.887 million hectares of food crops turned out 29.42 million tons of food grains, including 16.93 million tons of rice from 2.01 million hectares, 7.04 million tons of wheat from 17.13 million hectares, 460 thousand cotton lint from 384 thousand hectares and 2.33 million tons of oilseeds from 927 thousand hectares.

The horticulture has become one of the sub-sectors with the best performance. In 2001, the vegetable production grew to 1.307 million hectares, including 220 thousand hectares under shelters; The 21 thousand hectares of tea plantation turned out 12 thousand tons of dried tealeaves, (70% of them were top-quality products); 161 thousand hectares of orchards produced 1.91 million tons of fruit; The mulberry plantation grew to 101 thousand hectares and the silkworm cocoons production came up to 116 thousand tons; and 28 thousand hectares of flowers turned out 100 million pieces of cut flowers. In addition, Jiangsu produced 25 million square meters of turf grass, 80 million pots of flowers and 600 thousand pots of bonsai.

Forestry

The forestry typical of plain features has taken shape in Jiangsu. The system consists of the mainstay of forest farms on plain and hilly regions, the shelterbelts along the river embankment and the coast, the farmland windbreaks, supplemented with sporadic plants in courtyards and on roadside for ornamental purposes.

Livestock

As one of the important mainstays of agriculture, the livestock in Jiangsu is the mixture of ancient activity and modern industry. In 2001, Jiangsu ranked the sixth in China by turning out 3.41 million tons of meat, including 2.15 million tons of pork and 990 thousand tons of poultry, ranked the fourth in China by producing 1.8 million tons of eggs. The milk production was 350,000 tons, with the growth rate above the national average.

Fishery

In 2001, 736 thousand hectares of culture fishery turned out 3.21 million tons of produces, including 2.27 million tons of produce from 592 thousand hectares of fresh-water culture. The special fishery culture represented 42.1% of the fresh-water culture. The marine culture of the year was 144 thousand hectares, with 940 thousand tons of output. Mussel culture has become hot in marine culture.
